MAEJT Nigeria Participates in Children's Play Day Celebration
On 30th May, MAEJT Nigeria had the privilege of participating in a Children's Play Day event organized by Heart and Hands Humanitarian Foundation following an invitation extended to our organization.
Representing MAEJT Nigeria at the event were members of our Performing Group alongside children and young people from the Makoko Association. The occasion provided a vibrant platform for children to interact, learn, and express themselves through recreation and cultural activities.
A major highlight of the event was the captivating cultural performance presented by the MAEJT Performing Group, which showcased the talents, creativity, and confidence of the children and young people. Our representatives also actively participated in the various games and recreational activities organized throughout the day, contributing to the lively and inclusive atmosphere.
The event further provided an opportunity for networking and collaboration among organizations committed to child protection and children's wellbeing. Other partners in attendance included CAPRIGHT-VP and Cece Yara Foundation.
MAEJT Nigeria appreciates Heart and Hands Humanitarian Foundation for creating a safe and enjoyable space where children could play, connect, and celebrate their childhood. Community Sensitization on Child Exploitation, Child Labour, Risks, and Warning Signs
Yesterday, our Communications Manager had the privilege of facilitating a community sensitization organized by Timidi and Ayamba Empowerment Foundation (TAEF) on Recognizing Abuse, Exploitation, and Warning Signs, representing MAEJT NIGERIA.
The session was highly interactive, with participants actively sharing experiences, asking insightful questions, and strengthening their understanding of child exploitation, child labour, associated risks, and the warning signs of abuse. Together, we explored practical strategies that families and communities can adopt to identify early signs of abuse, prevent exploitation, and create safer environments where every child can thrive.
The sensitization was further enriched by the valuable contributions of our partners.
Janet Homo, representing Devatop Centre for Africa Development, delivered an insightful session on referral pathways and reporting mechanisms, emphasizing the importance of timely reporting and coordinated responses to child protection concerns.
Azeez Ajifowoke, representing Cece Yara Child Advocacy Centre, spoke extensively on the roles of families and communities in protecting children, encouraging participants to take collective responsibility for creating safe and supportive environments for every child.
At MAEJT Nigeria, we believe that protecting children begins with informed and empowered communities. Education: Every Child's Right, Every Community's Responsibility
Education is the foundation upon which every child builds a brighter future. It equips children with knowledge, confidence, life skills, and opportunities to reach their full potential. Yet, for many children involved in exploitative child labour, especially child domestic work, access to quality education remains a daily struggle.
During our recent radio sensitization, we explored the important connection between education and child development. The discussion highlighted that while children may contribute to age-appropriate household chores, these responsibilities should never interfere with their education, health, safety, or overall development.
We also examined how exploitative child labour affects children's physical, emotional, social, and intellectual growth. Children who are overworked, denied schooling, or exposed to abuse are often deprived of the chance to develop their talents and achieve their dreams.
The programme encouraged parents, caregivers, employers, community leaders, and all stakeholders to create environments where children can learn, grow, and thrive. Every child deserves the opportunity to attend school, enjoy a safe childhood, and develop into a responsible and productive member of society.
This sensitization forms part of the ongoing efforts of MAEJT NIGERIA under the Program to Address Exploitative Child Domestic Work (CDW) to raise awareness, promote child protection, and inspire collective action towards ending exploitative child domestic work and other forms of modern slavery in our communities.

MAEJT NIGERIA Nigeria participated in the Community of Practice (CoP)
On the 20th of August, MAEJT NIGERIA Nigeria participated in the Community of Practice (CoP) meeting convened under the "Addressing Exploitative Child Domestic Work in Lagos, Nigeria programme", supported by the United States Department of State and The Freedom Fund. The meeting brought together implementing partners and other key stakeholders to reflect on programme implementation, strengthen collaboration, and identify practical approaches for improving the protection and well-being of children affected by exploitative child domestic work.
A major highlight of the session was the launch of the Ethical Media Reporting Guidelines for Child Domestic Workers in Nigeria, developed by Cece Yara Child Advocacy Centre and Street Project Foundation through the collective contributions of implementing partners, media practitioners, and other relevant stakeholders. The development and launch of the guidelines represent an important step towards promoting responsible and child-sensitive reporting on issues affecting child domestic workers.
The session emphasized that while media reporting plays a critical role in exposing child protection concerns and influencing public discourse, stories involving children must be handled with care, dignity, confidentiality, and respect for their rights. Participants reflected on the potential risks of irresponsible reporting, including the exposure of children's identities, re-traumatization, stigma, discrimination, and further exploitation.
For MAEJT NIGERIA Nigeria, the guidelines are particularly relevant to its child-led advocacy and communications approach, where children's voices and experiences are central to efforts to influence positive change. The guidelines provide an important framework for ensuring that children's stories and perspectives can be amplified without compromising their safety, privacy, dignity, or best interests.
The activity also reinforced the importance of collaboration among civil society organizations, media practitioners, and other stakeholders in strengthening systems that protect children from exploitation. It provided an opportunity for implementing partners to deepen their shared understanding of ethical communication and promote more responsible approaches to documenting and communicating issues surrounding child domestic work.
Overall, the CoP meeting strengthened collaboration among programme partners and provided a valuable platform for promoting ethical, child-sensitive, and rights-based media reporting. The launch of the guidelines further reinforces MAEJT Nigeria's commitment to ensuring that every child is protected, heard, and represented with dignity, while using advocacy and communications as tools for advancing stronger responses to exploitative child domestic work.
